PURO Mag
Today’s walk is going to be nostalgic. On our search for friendly city spirits, we will snatch a glimpse at peculiar shop windows and peek inside a permanently closed hair salon, shedding tears for the time long gone. At the end of the walk, to assuage the feeling of nostalgia, we will taste the best cake in town!

What does Shakespeare have to do with Gdansk? Quite a lot, for the plays of the Bard of Avon were staged in the city already in his lifetime. The Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre is built on the site of the former Fencing School–the first public theater in the 17th-century Poland–and believed to be one of the most extraordinary theatres in the world inspired by the Elizabethan theatre.

I’m feeling really excited about our today’s walk. With a couple of chestnuts in my pocket, I’m going to introduce you to one of the most beautiful but underrated parts of Gdańsk – Jaśkowa Dolina. Surrounded by trees, the area boasts some truly exceptional architecture. Late-nineteenth-century villas look especially beautiful in autumn. Suffused with soft, painterly light, they pose charmingly among fallen leaves.

Each city has its own DNA made of unique places and creative people – artists, restaurateurs, artisans. Together with USTA Magazine, we trace genetic codes of each PURO city (Wroclaw, Tricity, Warsaw, Poznan, Krakow, Lodz) as part of the “OKO na…” / “An EYE for…” series that blends art fair, workshops, and artistic interventions in the spaces of PURO hotels. Recently, we had the pleasure to hold one of such events in PURO GDAŃSK and used the opportunity to showcase the potential of Tricity. We asked Monika Brzywczy, the editor-in-chief at USTA, for her recommendations on where to look for seaside gems and spots with mouthwatering food.

Atmospheric places full of magic and flavor: old tenement houses, hidden antiques shops, aromatic cafes and bars. Far from main tourist routes, but with their own distinctive spirit and truly regional character, these secret spaces are now discovered by Ania Włodarczyk** - a blogger and author of books on cooking, passionate about long walks, Tricity, and food - for the new PURO Mag series, Retro Walks.
