The exhibition 'From the Ashes – Z popiołów' is on view at Zachęta - National Gallery of Art until 26 May. It is an interdisciplinary group exhibition bringing together works by young artists from Poland and abroad made after 2020.
The artists critically comment on reality - technology, economics or politics. The curator of the exhibition, Michalina Sablik, uses the metaphor of the Phoenix to talk about the breakthrough moment we are in: 'In many cultures, this fantastical animal was associated with solar deities, meant to symbolise the cyclical nature, immortality and the rebirth of life. For centuries, it has been believed that the phoenix at the end of its life burns to be born again as a strong bird,' reads the exhibition website.
The works were made using a wide variety of means: new media, robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D design, ceramics, marquetry or ecological design.
The exhibition is divided into two parts - two themes. The first, 'Flame', talks about the climate, economic and social crisis through media images and the internet. This is where you can see the large-scale intarsia of Karolina Jarzębak, winner of the main prize in the painting competition of the Bielska Autumn painting competition.
The second theme, 'Birth', shows visions of the future, its ecological and technological dimensions. Here we will see, among other things, Julia Lohman's Corpus Maris II - object hanging from the ceiling, made of seaweed.
The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive educational and public programme with performances, workshops and curatorial tours.
