Tomasz Kowalski

Painter, illustrator, author of collages, object-machines, installations, video art. Critics consider Kowalski as part of a generation of artists “tired with reality” who have abandoned everyday experience and have turned to surrealistic aesthetics, oneiric poetics, fantasy and surrealism.

While still a student, he was already among the great artists represented by the prestigious Berlin Carlier-Gebauer gallery. Winner of the Guerlain Foundation’s Drawing Award. His works are in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, MUMOK – Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig and Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow MOCAK.

The BBAARR installation, created specifically for the exhibition “As You Can See. Polish Art Today”, is a reference to artistic crafts-manship: decorative window bars, gates and fences. Kowalski tests metalwork in the hostile territory of modern art, drawing a history of an imaginary, eccentric bar with steel wire.
